Light Aircraft Pilots Licence (H)

The aim of the LAPL(H) course is to train the student pilot to act as Pilot in Command under the Visual Flight Rules on single engine helicopters with a maximum certificated take-off mass of 2,000kg or less and a maximum of three passengers such that there are never more than four persons on board the aircraft.

  • The LAPL(H) course comprises 40 hours of flight instruction, including at least 20 hours of dual flight instruction and 10 hours of supervised solo flight time, including 5 hours of solo cross-country flight time.
  • Within the 5 hours solo cross-country flight time you will complete a cross-country flight of at least 150 km (80 NM), during which one full stop landing at an aerodrome different from the aerodrome of departure shall be made.
  • At least 35 of the 40 hours flight instruction must be completed on the same type of helicopter as the one used for the skill test.
  • Complete nine multiple choice theoretical knowledge examinations. The theoretical knowledge syllabus is covered through a combination of distance learning, formal classroom work and revision tutorials.

There are no pre-entry requirements for the LAPL(H) course, however you will need to meet the following requirements at various stages of your training:

  • Must be able to hold a medical issued in accordance with Part-MED before first solo, this medical can be of a lower standard than that required for a PPL(H), therefore allowing people with some medical issues to gain a licence.
